January 4, 2017 – Los Angeles, CA – Influential Gainesville punk band Less Than Jake has announced plans to release a new EP titled Sound The Alarm on February 3rd with their new label Pure Noise Records.

Speaking about the new song, lyricist and drummer Vinnie Fiorello says “the only thing constant is change” is one of the lines in the chorus of the song and such a massive truth to me. The sooner you could realize this, digest it, and embrace it the better off you’re going to be. Let it all move forward, at lightning speed. Everything and everyone changes, the world keeps on spinning like it or not.”
Less Than Jake’s new EP, Sound The Alarm, marks an exciting new chapter for the band as they celebrate 25 years together and a newly inked deal with Pure Noise Records. Featuring 7, ska infused punk songs that quickly remind listeners of the band’s incredible ability to craft memorable, hook-filled music.
“We started writing this set of songs, similar to our last record See The Light, sitting around a table in our warehouse with some acoustic guitars, lyrics scribbled on scraps of paper, and a constant barrage of ideas,” Fiorello explains. “Trying ideas as they would come out, sometimes chasing the idea, or getting connected or not connected to an idea right away. We had been writing and were planning on fleshing out the ideas while on Warped Tour.” 
Sound The Alarm was recorded and produced by Roger Lima and mixed at the famed punk recording studio, The Blasting Room, in Fort Collins, CO. The band wrapped the record following their run on last summer’s Vans Warped Tour.
After years of releasing records through various major and independent labels Less Than Jake has found a new home at the Southern California based Pure Noise Records.
“When I met Jake at the San Francisco stop of Warped Tour, we talked about working together,” Fiorello adds. “He is a longtime fan, knows the history and the arch of LTJ and that’s important to know where we have to go. It’s always great to have a mutual respect between band and label and that is exactly what we have between LTJ and Pure Noise.”
Fans can catch Less Than Jake live this winter on their co-headline U.S. tour with San Diego rock band Pepper, which starts in Dallas, TX on January 20th and wraps in St. Petersburg, FL on February 28th. Tickets are on sale now at http://www.lessthanjake.com/.

THE INTERRUPTERS TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM ‘SAY IT OUT LOUD’ AVAILABLE JUNE 24 ON HELLCAT RECORDS

Los Angeles-based ska-punk band The Interrupters will release their sophomore album, Say It Out Loud, on June 24 via Hellcat Records. Say It Out Loud is undeniably fun and urgent in message. And backing their modernized 2-Tone-tinged, guitar-fueled, melody-heavy sound are lyrics that confront everything from social control and self-empowerment to domestic violence and the media circus surrounding the next presidential election.

True to The Interrupters’ unabandoned passion and personal-meets-political dynamic, the first song shared from the album is “By My Side,” a fist-pumping, tender tribute to outcast solidarity.

Since the release of their 2014 self-titled debut, The Interrupters have split their time between touring with the likes of The English Beat and Bad Religion and cranking out new material that shows off their irrepressible sensibility. So when the time came to record their sophomore album Say It Out Loud, the four-piece hit the studio with Rancid’s Tim Armstrong and fired off 14 new songs that both capture their frenetic energy and reveal a whole new level of boldness in their songwriting.

“Over the past couple years we got to know ourselves so much better as a band, and that gave us a lot of room to really grow on this album,” notes frontwoman Aimee Interrupter, whose bandmates include guitarist Kevin Bivona, bassist Justin Bivona, and drummer Jesse Bivona.

Produced by Armstrong and recorded partly at his studio (as well as at Travis Barker’s Opra Studios), Say It Out Loud are a batch of feel-good songs proving The Interrupters’ unstoppably upbeat spirit. The Interrupters have forged a formidable bond that deeply informs their music. “Loyalty, family, friendship, and unity—with upstrokes,” says Kevin. “That pretty much sums up The Interrupters and what we are all about.”

Aggravatin’ Rhythms, The Daggers third full-length album since 2002, ain’t your daddy’s surf rock, though the group certainly bares the influence of seminal surf legends, Dick Dale and Link Wray. Founding member and lead guitarist for The Coffin Daggers Viktor Venom hails from the vaunted East Coast ‘80s punk scene as a founder of crust punk band Nausea as well as a previous turn as bass player for Reagan Youth. Venom is joined by keyboardist extraordinaire and rhythm guitarist Rob Morrison, bassist Peter Klarnet and drummer Pete Martinez. Together this quartet are simply one of the most unique groups around. Speaking about the new album, bassist Klarnet declares, “We decided to go all out with this LP, so we recorded it over 16 tracks on 2 inch tape at Metrosonic Studios in Brooklyn—resulting in a deep, lush sound. It’s certainly not the cheapest way to record these days, but we all firmly believe that if you’re going to record something for posterity, it might as well be the highest quality possible. The proof of course is in the final product which we believe is our finest effort to date.” Previous releases by the band have been praised by Guitar Player who observed that Venom “moves proceedings beyond mere era emulation by unleashing a rude and vicious riff that would have made Link Wray smile.” Meanwhile, the group’s live performances have floored both European and American audiences from start to finish, prompting Chart magazine to declare “no one comes close to The Coffin Daggers when it comes to all-out intensity…they will stomp a mudhole into your fragile minds.”

PEARS – GREEN STAR – OUT APRIL 1!

(San Francisco, CA, January 20, 2016) –PEARS laid siege to the punk world with their 2014 debut release, Go To Prison, and have been on a buzz-generating rampage ever since. After spending the better part of two years turning the hardcore scene on its ear, PEARS continue along the warpath with their hotly anticipated second full-length, Green Star, out April 1st (no joke!). Green Star rages with 16 tracks that are loaded with blazingly fast spurts of aggression. Re-recorded versions of “Snowflake” and “Anhedonia” (previously heard on last year’s Letters to Memaw 7-inch) take on new life, thanks in part to A Wilhelm Scream guitarist Mike Supina, who helped engineer the album. Alongside Supina, James Whitten, who also helped produce Go To Prison, works his magic on 14 new tracks of unstoppable hardcore.

To elaborate on how PEARS approached recording their latest full-length, singer Zach Quinn says, “The biggest difference was Go To Prison was a fast thing—we just threw it together. This, we slaved over it. We wrote songs and cut songs and cut parts of songs and put them into other songs. It was a nightmare, but I’ve never been more proud of anything. Even though it was a completely different process, it feels like the next step.”

PEARS are already tackling 2016 with vigor. Expect PEARS to continue to bring that energy to stages around the world, starting with Australia in March, followed by North America and Europe.

Greg Graffin Releases New Book, Population Wars

According to popular opinion, the history of humanity has largely been defined by war from the beginning, with war between populations seen as an inevitable part of the evolutionary process. Darwin’s widely accepted notion of “the survival of the fittest” explains and often excuses these actions. But what if Darwin was wrong?

americana-naWelcome to the debut release by Wichita, KS based folk/rock/garage/americana/tejano/cowpunk act, Americana-Na. The self-titled debut brings about an intriguing blend of musical genres. The songs are uptempo and of short duration in the vein of punk rock, but with less vitriol and intensity that is often associated with the aforementioned genre. The prior has been replaced with tongue-in-cheek (I assume) storytelling about American flag t-shirts ala the opener, “American” and what seems to be the Spanglish, or maybe it’s Gringlish stylings of “Eclipse”. Musically, the songs are simple chord driven 4/4 numbers with a “kick/snare, kick/snare, kick/snare, fill” cowboy/country rhythm.

The overall vibe comes across as slightly less than serious. This isn’t a bad thing mind you, so much as something to note. Vocally, the tunes sound a bit tortured, as though someone was trying to wring a note out of a old worn boot. I think that, in significant part, helps with the less-than-serious overtone. The songs are raw and rough around the edges. I think the mutli-colored duct tape cover provides a nice visual compliment to the tracks being haphazardly held together, perhaps by the very mystical properties of duct tape itself.

I’d be hard pressed to list all of the influences that are melded into the sound, but there’s a little band that I’m reminded of continually as I listen to this: Awesome and the Ass-kickers. … If you haven’t heard them, look them up.

At the end of it, the debut release by Americana-Na is 8 short, fun tracks and one track that is about double the length of the others. … that’s like getting ten tracks I’d say. Good deal!

Revolt Revolt Video Premier for Hold On Let’s Go

Here at !upstarter we’re happy to premier the brand new video for Hold On Let’s Go.

Revolt Revolt comes to us from the population metropolis of the Inter-mountain West, aka Boise ID. The put together a blend of rock and psychedelic and the occasional foray into more aggressive territory. The video track is spacial and trippy, with stabs of noise and reverberated lush backing. If it’s your thing, I’d bet this would be a freaking awesome jam to get really really wasted whilst listening too. It’s really kinda freaking me out and I’m totally sober right now.

The footage for the video to “Hold On Let’s Let Go” was captured by Joseph David Lockhart while on tour with Revolt Revolt & Mindrips in May of 2015. The band(s) toured from Idaho through Las Vegas, and made their way up the California coastline on into Oregon and Washington. Some of the footage includes scenes from Venice Beach, Portland, Olympia, and Seattle. Cameos include Members of Mindrips, Joseph Lockhart, & Ben Brunn (Stereo Embers/Past RevoltRevolt)

Hold On Let’s Let Go was recorded at Audio Lab Studios Boise, Idaho by Todd Dunnigan. This is an original song by RevoltRevolt which additionally features the talents of Dug Marstch (Built to Spill) on guitars, Todd Dunnigan on The Hammond Organ, and Legendary Earl Huges on Steel Guitar. Dunnigan’s gospel tinged organ gives the poignant melody of “Hold On Let’s Let Go” a dark, unnerving tone. Bock’s bluesy, distorted solo duels with Martsch’s mixed down, metallic shredding to disturb the song’s calm, quiet feel, then quickly vanishes to let the woeful vocals and mournful sustained notes of special guest Earl Hughes’s steel guitar take the tune home. Lyrically this song speaks of the importance of remembering to let go.. fear less live more.

July 23, 2015 – Los Angeles, CA – Huntington Beach independent label No Sleep Records announces today they’ve partnered with revered and influential Florida bred hardcore band, Shai Hulud.  Recently, the label leaked a new song from the band called “Colder Than The Cold World,” which will be featured on the band’s upcoming record and can be streamed now at http://bit.ly/1D4akIv. Statement From Shai Hulud:
“Warmth and gratefulness runs as deeply within Shai Hulud as cynicism and misanthropy. Since the band’s inception we have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to affiliate ourselves with record labels we not only respect, but whose output helped shape both our band and our individual lives. This is something we could never take for granted. Having been respectively welcomed into the Revelation Records and Metal Blade Records families has been a boon, professionally, and personally, nothing short of a fanciful dream made real.

Shai Hulud formed in Pompano Beach, FL in 1995 and were originally signed to Revelation Records and featured a young, unknown singer Chad Gilbert, who would eventually go on to found New Found Glory. Over the years the band consisted of an array of musicians with Matt Fox (guitar) and Matt Fletcher (bass) being the longest standing members.
Shai Hulud’s legacy was cemented with the release of their 1997 debut full-length record, Hearts Once Nourished with Hope and Compassion, which received critical acclaim and influenced hardcore bands over the next decade. The band would follow their intrepid release with three more records, including their most recent, 2013’s Reach Beyond the Sun.
