Popclaw – Atomic Summer

I’m listening to the new EP, “Atomic Summer” from Southeast England’s Popclaw. It’s got four tracks of peppy punk rock, created by a duo who’ve never stepped foot in the same room. (Ain’t technology amazing!?)

Track 1: Let’s Start A Riot reminds me a bit of Rancid, in a good way. In particular it makes me think of some of the more Lars-centric tracks.

Track 2: Anthem of Chaos has a sweet vocal hook that keeps running through my head, and after a few listens really has a similar vibe to Blood Rushes by Aussie punk band, Civic. If not a total coincidence, a solid influence. 

Track 3: The titular track, Atomic Summer has a delivery that reminds me of something that I can’t quite pin down, but I like it. 

Track 4: Chasing Shadows is the longest on the EP and is a bit of a dissonant number. It’s got some garage / lo-fi vibes to it, without being overly scrappy. 

Atomic Summer: A fun EP from the geographically diverse Popclaw. I like the nature and direction, and look forward to hearing more in the future. 

The EP will be  available on all major streaming platforms 3rd January, 2025.

The Dynamite Club – Is The Dancefloor Calling?… No.

So I had a chance to listen to the debut EP from The Dynamite Club “Is The Dancefloor Calling?… No.” If you’re unfamiliar with them now, you won’t be for long. This EP hits hard right out of the gate with the opening song “Wake Up” and then keeps you guessing just what kind of band you’re listening to with more anthem styled tunes like “Apocalypse” and “One Sixth” to more pop punk influenced tunes like “Erotomania”. 

This hard working punk band from across the pond with two snarky English singers has been working it out for the past five years in the London area. Their DIY ethics are evident in this recording produced and mixed by James Kirsch. 

My only complaint about this EP is that there isn’t, as of yet more from The Dynamite Club to listen to. If you’re in the mood for a band that is a little different than you’re used to, but would fit perfectly on a playlist with your favourite SoCal punk bands, Is The Dance Floor Calling?… No. might just hit the spot.

Bio:
Been a band for about 5 years, with James and Steven joining in last couple. Everything you see and hear is done totally DIY (with a little help from our friends). 

​We’ve played shows for the likes of the Garageland club, Camden Rocks and South London Punk Collective.

​Influences: fast punk n roll from 1950s to present day.

WEAK13 release new music video for “Obey The Slave

British underground post punk band WEAK13 have released a new music video for their song “Obey The Slave” from their 2016 album They Live. The music video was filmed in a real English magistrates court and revolves around a theme of law and order. The song raises questions about authority and activism with thought provoking lyrics and proudly shouts “Don’t start a revolution. Have a revelation and share. Wake up”. Check out the video below.

The band is currently preparing to record their second as yet untitled studio album with producer John Stewart at FrEQ in Coventry, England. Speaking to the website, frontman and guitarist Nick J Townsend revealed “We were so impressed with the engineering by Stewart on the They Live album; it’s important news that we’ll be able to work with him again and we know already that he’ll do the new material the justice it deserves”. The They Live album contains the song “Obey The Slave” and is only available from weak13official.com

I love listening to comps. I hate reviewing comps. There are just too many aspects going on at once. Do I pass judgement on the music as a whole or the individual artists or the generation as a whole? It’s hard to say. This comp Brought to you by BYO and Artcor Fanzine is “Greetings From The Welfare State” and no their not talking about Arkansas. This is the Best of British Punk going on now. Sure they may have a tiny little island, but they get the evil dreary weather that fuels their angst and misery. I should know I’m in Portland, OR (misery central) Whatever, If you’re looking to cross some international waters to pick up on some stuff the kids down the street arn’t into yet, go grab this comp and find some culture in the punks from the UK. Highlights for me include Goober Patrol, Newton Grunts and Four Letter Word. Later I’m Out…
