Do It With Malice – The Burned Over District

[ad]

[rating:3/5]
© 2010 Do It With Malice

Do you ever listen to new music and hear an influence or similarity, a subtle influence in the sound that makes your mind battle to figure out who or what it reminds you of? Well damn if I don’t have that going on when I listen to The Burned Over District, the new release from Do It With Malice.

Do It With Malice (DIWM) hails from the city of Buffalo in the great state of New York and plays an intriguing blend of metal punk ska. As a five-piece, the band is stripped down for efficiency considering that they have a 2/5 horn player ratio. I say hells yeah, good for them, less people to split the income with.

The Burned Out District features 10 tracks running reasonably on the quick side of the tempo spectrum. The majority of the songs are, to one degree or another, ska influenced and run heavy on the metal. An interesting note is that a good portion, especially in the early tracks of the disc, lead in with very 80’s style intros. Just listen to the single note metal riffery of “Fermeta Armada” and the clean/chorus guitar intro on track 2, “6-18” and you’ll know exactly what I mean.

In addition to previous, It also feels like there is a bit of funk influence as well. Overall, I think The Burned Over District is a solid and competent, if not completely cohesive release. I think maybe I would have arranged tracks a bit differently and I think I would ditch a lot of the guitar effects, but hey opinions vary. … But what the hell does this remind me of? Now that I think more about it, the entire sound makes me think of newer Catch 22 mixed with 311 … if you add that up, you get Catch 333 … coincidence, I think not.

Bottom line: Solid ska/punk/metal outta Buffalo. I think I would totally dig them live.

Tracks:
1: Fermata Armada
2: 6.18
3: Take The Stage
4: Russian Roulette
5: No Music
6: Nickel and Dime
7: Rabiddz
8: Pirt Egnarts
9: Choke Me Running
10: Commodity

Civet Love & War Due Out Feb 22

[ad]
January 12, 2011 – Los Angeles, CA – LA rock band Civet have announced plans to release their fourth studio album, Love & War, via Hellcat Records on February 22. Fans can check out the album’s first single, “L.A. Nights,” now at http://soundcloud.com/hellcatrecords/civet-l-a-nights. The album will also be available on vinyl at a later date.

Led by provocative sisters Liza Graves and Suzi Carmichael, Civet hold the torch once held by such groundbreaking female-fronted bands as The Runaways, Bikini Kill, L7, Hole and The Distillers, with the release of their fearless new studio album Love & War.

“Recording the new record was very liberating; we knew what we wanted and went for it!” says Graves. “Our choruses are bigger and badder than the last record, coupled with blazing guitar solos & raw vocals everyone has come to love; that combination of Motörhead grit and ‘77 raw power. There are various influences that can be heard on all the songs, so the whole record doesn’t reflect one particular era or genre. We weren’t afraid to pull from all scopes of the musical spectrum when writing this record.”

After their Hellcat debut, Hell Hath No Fury, in 2008, Civet took the world by storm, touring Europe, Japan and North America extensively with such greats as Flogging Molly, H20, The Adicts, Dropkick Murphys, The Pogues and the Vans Warped Tour. The album received rave reviews from critics and fans and created a whirlwind of press for the band, and anticipation for their follow-up has been mounting ever since.

Civet spent the last several years on the road refining the band’s direction, and when it came time to record their follow up to Hell Hath No Fury decided to forgo an outside producer and record the album themselves. “We knew the vision we had for this record better than anybody, so we decided to go for it!” says Carmichael.
And the result is Love and War, 14 daring and unapologetic tracks about relationships gone wrong, shattered dreams and their journey to where they are today. With a matured sense of reality, the girls dug deeper than ever have before and translated their experiences over the past few years into soul wrenching lyrics and choruses on the new album. “On this record, Suzi and I not only found our voice, but we rediscovered our punk rock ‘n’ roll roots,” says Graves.

Armed with Graves’ trademark deep raspy vocals and Carmichael’s incendiary lead guitars, Civet bare their teeth on songs like the brash party anthem, “L.A. Nights” and the angst fueled “Summer of Hate,” and sink their claws into fans with feverous deploy on one of the band’s best written albums yet.

Shirock To Release Everything Burns

SHIROCK TO RELEASE EVERYTHING BURNS (DELUXE) ON FEBRUARY 22 ON THE MOVEMENT GROUP

RELEASE CONTAINS NEW AND UNRELEASED MATERIAL

BAND TO RELEASE 3 TRACK DIGITAL SINGLE FOR NEW SOLUTION ON JANUARY 25

Formed in Nashville, TN-SHIROCK will be kicking off 2011 with the release of Everything Burns (Deluxe), release to include eight new or unreleased tracks, 20 tracks in total, the SHIROCKumentary and the new music video for New Solution. CD will be available on February 22 at all digital outlets on The Movement Group with distribution through RED and specialized marketing efforts via CEN-Creative Entertainment Network.

SHIROCK IS: Chuck Shirock – lead vocals, guitar, Pap Shirock – lead vocals, keys, Adam Gatchel – drums, Kevin Whitsett – bass, Evan Weatherford – lead guitar

Also coming to all digital outlets on January 21 will be a 3 track single for song New Solution, release will include single version, LP version and dance remix produced by KCORIHS.

Already making quite a buzz with their DIY efforts SHIROCK makes music that capitalizes on the transformative power of rock and roll and its ability to move and inspire people. Everything Burns (Deluxe) is filled with bold, anthemic songs that bristle with restless urgency and passionate optimism. You can hear it not only in the sonics — the sweeping melodies, the textured layers of gritty guitars and plaintive keyboards, and Chuck’s fervent wailing vocals — but also in the lyrics, which are rooted in the personal, the political, and the spiritual. Produced by Jay Ruston, who has also worked with The Donnas, Everclear, Matisyahu, and Cold War Kids, Everything Burns (Deluxe) may sound grand and expansive, but underneath the soaring arrangements is a singer/songwriter album at heart, creating an interesting tension that allows the songs to feel both personal and universal.

At the end of 2010 Chuck and Pap partnered with the band’s manager to launch a company called The Movement Group. The Movement Group houses everything SHIROCK does, including the band’s independent record label. The Movement Group has partnered with Sony, RED Distribution and Creative Entertainment Network (CEN) to launch the label division of the company in order to take the songs on Everything Burns to the next level. “We think being independent keeps the art of our music genuine. We form partnerships and friendships that wisely keep us moving forward,” Chuck says. And finally, by the end of 2010 SHIROCK had performed over 100 high school shows. “Historically, young people ignite cultural revolutions. We want to meet our fans as soon as we can in their life journey, and be the soundtrack for them as they seek to impact the world around them.”

January 10- With the success of their album The Upsides, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania natives The Wonder Years entered the studio this past weekend to record their upcoming Hopeless Records full length with producer Steve Evetts (Saves The Day, Lifetime, Every Time I Die).

“Steve Evetts is a legend in our eyes. The man has produced some of the greatest pop punk and hardcore releases of all time. He has the ability to make anything from Saves the Day to Every Time I Die sound good. I trust his judgment, I think he’s going to help push us to make a better record than we could ever thought possible and honestly, I just want to bother him with questions about what it was like to record Through Being Cool.”

Bust – Suck Kuts

[ad]

[rating:3/5]
© 2010 Cassette Deck Media

As per the !upstarter m.o., this review is rolling in a little on the late side. I’ll go ahead and blame the holidays. At any rate, here is some manner of review.

Behold Suck Kuts (No seriously behold that cover; chick-son-of-bitchin-magnet says I.) the new release from the dynamic duo of Kyle Stembaugh and Jon Olson, heretofore known as Bust. Suck Kuts flings forth with 10 (suck) cuts of punk bombast at the fever pitch that only garages and their related ilk can generally thrust forth.

The diddys are short and sweet and laden with the disenchantment of boredom and life of better laid plans. As I alluded to above, the sound is classic “garage” punk rock, raw and gritty. You know the sound I’m talking about. A band on a mission. A band without 80 brazillion dollars in studio gear and engineering. Don’t get me wrong, I like the occasional ultra-polish, but I believe a band is best heard in the raw and Suck Kuts is done the way I prefer.

For the vinyl aficionados out there, Suck Kuts is carved onto white vinyl and includes a mp3 download code for the kiddies. The liner assures me that Bust would like to thank “Cool Bands, Cool Dudes, and Cool Zunes”, so all you Microsoft mp3 players out there that fit some of that bill, cheers. Oh, and rumor has it that if you purchase the vinyl, “You also have a 1 in 500th chance in finding Matt Skiba’s cell phone number scribbled inside.”

Bottom line: 10 tracks of duo-istic punk rock served old school on white vinyl

Tracks:
1. The Whinery (Merlot Blow)
2. Who Wants to Fuck Bill Rogers?
3. Pear At Heart
4. High on Life, Drunk off Mouthwash
5. Push Ups
6. That Don’t Impressuh Me Much
7. Talk Nerdy To Me
8. First Bench
9. Unsmooth Moments
10. Sascrotch

It’s the season to celebrate, so dust off your tuxedo and get ready to make your entrance in style. Heineken’s new film serves up some inspiration.

The Entrance, a 90-second cinematic masterpiece, kicks off Heineken’s latest global brand campaign. The film’s hero demonstrates the ultimate party entrance by charming his way past a gun-wielding oilman, a Russian canary, and a kung fu assassin, before getting his flute out on stage with the smoking-hot lead singer of the Asteroids Galaxy Tour; the Danish band’s latest single, The Golden Age, provides the sizzling backing track to the film.

The film was rehearsed and shot over a week in a palace near Barcelona, with more than 100 actors playing a part in the blockbuster. The Entrance execution includes 12 additional online teasers that reveal the secret back-stories of key characters in the film. They include Kung Fu Comeback, Heineken Duet and the classic, Big in Wonderland , featuring a couple of basketball players who take their training to the next level.

Heineken’s new campaign will see the release of similarly intriguing films over the next few months. In the meantime, if you’re after some tips on how to nail your next entrance, watch the film and explore the hidden stories of its characters at Facebook.com/Heineken.
