Debut album from Helsinki Finland act, Buzzkills. 12 tracks of punk/punkbilly from up near the top of the word.
As always, it thrills me to get to hear bands from all around the world. Buzzkills is no exception. Here I am in sunny SoCal and listening to a band from damn near the other side of the world. I’ve never been to Finland, but here I am participating in a little bit of their culture, by way of an offering into our common culture of music.
Buzzkillz deliver a solid blend of rock, punk, and rockabilly. They’re an interesting ensemble in that they are a four-piece rock and roll band with the tradition lineup of vocals, guitar, bass, drums. Where the band differs is in their use of double bass as opposed to electric. The overall effect reminds me a bit of The Peacocks, but, well, different.
Tracks mid to uptempo, with a blend of Western rock / cowpunk, reminisicient in a way of Social Distortion, or perhaps more Mike Ness solo. The tracks are sung in English, so as to be more accessible to a larger audience.
The band indicates that they will have new material coming out at the end of the year, so go check out their debut and get in on the ground floor. Tell all your friends that you heard ‘em before they were cool!

We are mostly from Tokyo, Japan. We started this band late 80s.
Cleanhead Gimura called up few of us and started Tokyo Ska.
His idea was to start a ska band yet combining ska music with what was happening in the Tokyo music scene then.
We were very underground when we first started.

I’m Atsushi Yanaka and I play baritone sax. I’m one of the original members.

How would you best describe the sound?
We name the genre of our music, “Tokyo Ska”
Based on Ska beat, we play rock, jazz, punk, soul to any genre of music.
The band members all came from different background, some are jazz musicians, one came from a rock band, one from a dub band, one guy is an expert on Frankk Zapp and some are total authentic ska freak. We fuse all kinds of influences into our music. It is hard to describe our sound.
Dream rock moment (real or not)?
We love the moments to witness our audience with only smile on their faces during our show. We are totally united with music.
We have been saying “Paradise Has No Border” as in the title of our song or of the album we are releasing.
Looking at everyone’s faces from the stage, we are convinced that there are no borders when you are all united with music.
Everyone is happy. That’s our dream to see people smiling all over the world just like we see in the concert venues.

New York City post-hardcore band Quicksand are pleased to announce the upcoming release of Interiors, their first album in 22 years. Interiors features the band’s original (and only) lineup of drummer Alan Cage, frontman/guitarist Walter Schreifels, bassist Sergio Vega, and guitarist Tom Capone. The album will be released on November 10 on Epitaph.
Quicksand have also shared a new video for the first song shared off the album titled “Illuminant,” the lead single and opening track from Interiors.
With its heavy but melodic guitar lines, intense rhythms, and emotionally charged lyrics, “Illuminant” shows the scope of Quicksand’s influence on post-hardcore and indie-rock bands over the last two decades.
Recorded at Studio 4 Recording in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, Interiorswas produced and engineered by Will Yip (The Menzingers, Title Fight, Pianos Become the Teeth). While the album finds Quicksand embracing the cathartic, guitar-driven dynamic of their earlier work, Interiors also takes on a wider spectrum of sound.
“It was all just about being ourselves and who we were as well as who we are,” says Schreifels of the making of Interiors. “We did it for us completely.”
Formed in 1990, Quicksand made their full-length debut with Slip—a 1993 release recently praised by The A.V. Club as “a nearly flawless record that combines the irony and heaviness of Helmet with Fugazi’s penchant to dismantle sound in the most energetic ways.” Arriving in 1995, their sophomore album Manic Compressionappeared at #1 on the Top Five Best Post-Hardcore Records list from LA Weekly (who noted that “if there were any justice in the world, Quicksand would have been the biggest underground band of the ’90s”).
“We were very influenced by Fugazi and Jane’s Addiction” says Schreifels of the band’s beginnings. “But we were doing it in a certain context with an energy that was just special and unique and kind of shined through.”
Throughout the early ’90s, Quicksand toured with bands like Helmet, Fugazi, Rage Against the Machine, and Anthrax. After disbanding in late 1995, they reunited for a one-night performance in June 2012. They’ve since appeared at festivals like FYF Fest and Pukkelpop, and in 2013 embarked on their first North American tour in 15 years.

GODS.GUTTERS.STONES, the new EP from The Orphan (Melbourne Australia) blasts out three tracks of noisy garage hardcore. The tracks are an intense wash of sound to the point of being a blur. Sounds jab at you from all directions leaving you reeling from the sonic assault. Each track bleeds into the next as you begin to bleed from your ears. Individual tracks are representative of the triumvirate title, with the final track, “Stones” bringing the EP to a grinding guttural conclusion. Listen at your peril.
